Victorian Schools Mental
Health Fund and Menu

Working at the CETC

As a division of the Australian Childhood Foundation, the CETC primary aim is to mobilise knowledge to improve outcomes for children and young people in out-of-home care.  If you have a commitment to hard work and would love the opportunity to support system change, we would love to hear from you.

Participate in research

Our research relies on strong partnerships with practitioners, organisations and those with lived experience of out-of-home care. If you would like be involved, please read more about our latest research project.

Share your knowledge

We believe in the common saying, “none of us is as smart as all of us”. If you are a carer, practitioner, policy maker or researcher with knowledge to share, we would love to hear from you.

The Australian Childhood Foundation is a provider on the 2025-2027 Victorian Schools Mental Health Fund and Menu. Our programs have been developed from research evidence and practice wisdom that has been derived from providing trauma informed programs to children, their families and schools for many years.

The programs are part of our Making SPACE for Learning Framework – a framework for Trauma-Transformative Practice in Schools. For over 20 years, Making SPACE for Learning has been supporting schools to better understand and meet the needs of children, young people, families and communities who have been affected by trauma.

Making SPACE for Learning

Schools play an important and powerful role as part of a team around children and young people who have experienced trauma. The daily interaction with an educator or other school staff can promote wellbeing, model safe relational exchange, and contribute to healing and recovery.

Our recently refreshed Making SPACE for Learning Workshop is informed by contemporary insights and trauma-transformative practice in education. It describes a revised set of principles (SPACE) that can be applied within an education environment. The practical application of these principles supports school to integrate this knowledge in responding to the needs of children and young people impacted by trauma.

Learning objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the knowledge base of neurobiology and the developmental needs of children and young people.
  2. Define trauma and explain its impacts on children and young people in an education setting.
  3. Explain and apply the Making SPACE for Learning framework, including the SPACE Principles and Places of influence.
  4. Integrate the practice framework into your professional context through strategies and activities.
  5. Reflect on and apply approaches to maintain and enhance professional wellbeing in educational settings.

This training is delivered by education and training consultants with knowledge and experience in delivering trauma informed professional learning. They have a strong understanding of trauma and its impact on children and families and how this applies in education settings.

Implementation considerations
No prior training is required and backfill is not required if the training is delivered on a non-teaching day. The target audience is all school staff and while the program is particularly suited for teachers and education support officers, it is also highly valuable for school leaders, professional staff in schools and other non-teaching and support staff.
