Risky Play: Supporting children recovering from trauma

Introduction

This workshop explores how risky and loose parts play can support children 0-5 years or older children affected by trauma. Participants will learn what risky and loose parts play are, how they can support all children’s development and build children’s confidence and resilience. 
 
The early years are a critical time for children’s development, shaped by all the experiences they engage in. This workshop hopes to change mindsets about risky play for young children and support professionals to incorporate risky and loose parts play into their everyday work with children.  
 
This workshop explores: 
  • Understanding trauma to support healing 
  • What risky and loose parts play looks like and how to implement it in your work with children 
  • The benefits of risky and loose parts play especially in the outdoor environment 
  • How risky and loose parts play allows children free expression, sensory exploration and supports healing from trauma 
  • How to allow children to determine their level of risk comfort, insomuch as it is different to adults’ ideas of level of risk  
  • The reawakening of feelings of pleasure, joy and engagement that have been dulled by trauma exposure 
 
About the facilitator: 
This workshop is delivered by experienced early childhood educators with experience in risky play environments and how this type of play can support trauma healing. Their work focuses on practical, play-based approaches that help children to assess risk, promotes personal boundaries and builds self-confidence. 

Target audience

Early childhood educators, family support workers, child and family health professionals, and other professionals working with children aged 0–5.
