At the CETC, we know how important it is to listen and learn from residential care workers about what works for young people in care.

Recently, we interviewed several residential workers in NSW about their roles, how they support young people, and how they keep them safe.

When asked, “How do you help young people feel safe in the residential home?” many workers talked about establishing and developing trusting relationships with the young people we want to protect.

Workers discussed the importance of having early conversations with young people to help them know what to expect before coming into the home and to build rapport. ITC youth support worker David said,

“We work with them to make it their space […] in hope of building a level of trust—and therefore, safety.”

They also emphasised the importance of consistency, both in being present and following through with what we say we’ll do. As Aydin, an ITC residential care worker, puts it:

“Just be that consistent face. I can be funny, I can be serious, I can be stern when I have to be stern… But no matter what, they’re getting a person that’s there every day.”

Clear and consistent boundaries play a significant role in building trust. These limits provide stability that young people can rely on when they feel insecure. House Manager Eve explained,

“Boundaries are imperative, for young people that equates to them feeling safe. We have a lot of success where I am, because we are able to hold these clear, consistent boundaries for young people, which eventually builds that trust.”
