Beyond the Screen – a Discussion Guide for the Documentary “Belonging”

This discussion guide is designed to support young people, carers, and professionals reflect on the experiences shared in Belonging: The Search for Identity in the Australian Foster Care System.

About the film

Directed and produced by Rachel Morley and Milissa Deitz, Belonging follows Hannah, a young woman who grew up in multiple foster homes, as she shares her journey to understand her story. It explores key themes including identity, meaning making, access to personal records, and Life Story Work.

The film and this discussion guide were both developed through a collaborative process, with input from Hannah, her family Sam and Nigel, as well as her support worker Shannon. The guide encourages honest, thoughtful conversations—centred on emotional wellbeing, cultural connection, and the role of safe, trusting relationships in supporting young people to make sense of their past.

Watch the film, then download the guide to reflect together—whether as a care team, support worker, or with colleagues in your service.
