Nurturing through nature: Supporting trauma healing

Introduction

This workshop explores the role of nature and the outdoors in supporting healing in children aged 0-5 who have experienced relational trauma. Participants will gain knowledge in being able to implement natural and outdoor experiences to support trauma recovery.

This workshop explores:
  • The science and research which suggests nature and outdoor experiences are essential to support early childhood development
  • How nature and outdoor play allows children free expression, sensory exploration and supports healing from trauma
  • How connecting with nature in the outdoors promotes physcial and mental wellbeing that negates stressful life experiences

About the facilitator
 
This workshop is facilitated by experienced early childhood practitioners and trauma-informed educators with experience using natural and outdoor experiences to support healing in young children. Their work focuses on practical, play based approaches that help children regulate, connect and thrive in trauma-aware environments.

Target Audience

Early childhood educators, family support workers and other professionals working with children aged 0-5.

  • Incorporate nature-based and outdoor play experiences to support children's overall development, including resilience and confidence
  • Use nature play to help children connect with the natural world as a way to find calm and regulate emotions
  • Encourage physical activity through outdoor play to support self- regulation and wellbeing
  • Understand the therapeutic benefits of nature play for children affected by trauma
